TIPS FOR HYDRATION IN DYSPHAGIA

  1. Consult a healthcare professional if you develop signs of dysphagia. If necessary, your healthcare professional can recommend the use of thickeners.
  2. Drink liquids with a modified texture, preferably between meals.
  3. Do not drink or administer beverages with a syringe or with straws.
  4. Take a small amount at once, using dessert spoons if needed.
  5. Increase your consumption of fruits and vegetables. Take special care when crushing them so that there are no seeds, fibres or skins that can cause choking.
  6. Don't wait until you feel thirsty to drink.
  7. Cold drinks are preferred as they help in swallowing.
  8. Increase your fluid intake during hot weather, and before, during, and after exercise or walking.
  9. If you have a certain condition that requires restriction of water intake, consult a healthcare professional to understand about fluid restrictions.
